Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
