Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
