Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
