Israel Strikes Iran as Explosions Heard in Tehran

Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.

Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran

As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.

“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately offer further details.

Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments

The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major events leading up to this attack involve:

  • American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
  • Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
  • Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
  • Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.

Reaction from Tehran

In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.

The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
