A minimum of thirteen people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
